How to Use Flashcards for English
Make flashcards that force recall, not recognition: a prompt on one side, the answer on the other. Build decks from the most common words first, learn words in short phrases rather than alone, and review on a spacing schedule so hard cards return sooner.
Level: A1. Flashcards are the fastest way to turn English words you have met into words you can actually use — if you make them test recall, not just recognition. The trick for English is to learn words inside short phrases, because so much of the language is fixed combinations.
By the end of this page you can…
…build an English flashcard deck from common words and review it with active recall and spacing.
Build your deck from vocabulary sets
Make cards from frequency-ranked lists — the most common words first — rather than random vocabulary. Filter out names and noise, and add a few new cards at a time. The commonest couple of thousand words cover most everyday English, so they repay study first.
A simple starting set of very common words:
- waterthe clear liquid you drink: a glass of water.
- housea building you live in: a big house.
- worka job or activity: I go to work.
- eatto take food: we eat at seven.
- goodof high quality or pleasant: a good book.
- every daya time phrase for habits: I read every day.
Use active recall, not re-reading
The learning happens in the moment you try to remember before flipping the card. Read the prompt, say the answer out loud or use it in a sentence, then check. Re-reading both sides feels productive but teaches little; the effort of recall is what makes a word stick.
Space your reviews
Review a card just before you would forget it. Each correct recall earns a longer wait before the next review; each miss brings the card back soon. Spaced-repetition (SRS) apps schedule this automatically — you simply answer honestly whether you remembered.
Make good cards
- One idea per card. A single word or phrase, not a list.
- Learn chunks, not just words. English relies on fixed combinations (collocations): you make a mistake, do your homework, are interested in something. Put the chunk on the card, not the bare word.
- Both directions. Make an English to meaning card and a meaning to English card, so you can both understand and produce the word.
- Add context. One short example sentence beats a bare definition. Pull natural sentences from a public corpus such as Tatoeba.
- Note tricky grammar. For an irregular verb, keep all three forms on one card: go, went, gone.
How to say it
English spelling hides its sounds, so add a pronunciation hint to any tricky card:
- Many common words are not spelled the way they sound: does (“duz”), says (“sez”), Wednesday (“wenz-day”). Write the sound on the card.
- Mark the stressed syllable on longer words: comFORtable is said with three syllables (“KUMF-tuh-bul”), not four.

English uses fixed combinations, so the verb matters — You say 'make a mistake', not 'do a mistake'; the collocation is part of the word's use.
