English Time Expressions

Short answer

Time expressions say when something happens: point words like now, today and tomorrow; frequency words like always, often and never; and clock times such as 'at seven'. Learn the common ones first, then the prepositions at, on and in that go in front of them.

Level: A1. Telling someone when is one of the first things you need in a new language. This page gathers the most common English time expressions, grouped by job — points in time, frequency, parts of the day, and the small prepositions that hold them together — each with a plain meaning and a short example you can copy.

By the end of this page you can…

…say when something happens with the right word, choose between at, on and in before a time, and place frequency words like always and never correctly in a sentence.

How this list was chosen

Every word here comes from the English frequency list (hermitdave/FrequencyWords), which ranks words by how often they appear in a large collection of everyday subtitles. From the top of that list we kept the time words an A1 learner needs first and grouped them by meaning rather than by rank, so related words stick together. The Rank column is the word’s real position in the list — a lower number means it is more common.
