English Animals Vocabulary

Cover illustration for English animals vocabulary: a dog, cat, horse, cow, lion, elephant and a bird.
Short answer

Animal vocabulary covers pets (dog, cat), farm animals (cow, pig, chicken), wild animals (lion, bear, elephant) and body parts like tail and wing. Learn the common everyday animals first, then the sounds and plurals that go with them.

Level: A1. Animals appear in children’s books, the news, the zoo and everyday small talk. This page gathers the most common English animal words, grouped by job: pets, farm animals, wild animals, water and sky animals, and the body parts and sounds that go with them, each with a plain meaning and a short example you can copy.

By the end of this page you can…

…name common pets, farm and wild animals, use their irregular plurals (mouse/mice, one sheep/two sheep), and describe what an animal does with sound verbs like bark and sing.

How this list was chosen

Every word here comes from the English frequency list (hermitdave/FrequencyWords), which ranks words by how often they appear in a large collection of everyday subtitles. From that list we kept the animal words an A1 learner meets first and grouped them by meaning rather than by rank. The Rank column is the word’s real position in the list — a lower number means it is more common.
