English Medical & Pharmacy Vocabulary
At a clinic or pharmacy you need the words to describe a symptom, name a treatment and read a label. Learn the everyday set — symptom, prescription, dose, appointment, painkiller — plus the phrases a doctor uses, like 'Where does it hurt?' and 'Take one tablet twice a day.'
Level: B1. When you are unwell in an English-speaking country, you need words fast: to book an appointment, describe a symptom, and understand the label on your medicine. This page gives you that everyday medical and pharmacy vocabulary, grouped by where you use it, each word with a plain meaning and a short example.
By the end of this page you can…
…make an appointment, describe how you feel, name common treatments, and understand simple instructions on a prescription or medicine label.
How this list was chosen
Every word here comes from the English frequency list (hermitdave/FrequencyWords), which ranks words by how often they appear in a large collection of everyday subtitles. From that list we kept the health, clinic and pharmacy words a B1 learner needs and grouped them by situation — people, symptoms, treatment, the pharmacy — rather than by rank. The Rank column is the word’s real position in the list: a lower number means more common. Specialist words such as ‘antibiotic’ or ‘prescription’ sit lower down (higher numbers), which is normal.
