English Colours Vocabulary
Learn the core colours first: red, blue, green, yellow, black, white and brown. A colour word is an adjective, so it goes before the noun (a red car) and never adds an -s (two red cars). Add light, dark or bright to fine-tune the shade: light blue, dark green.
Level: A1. Colours come up the moment you describe clothes, a car, a room or a photo. This page gives you the colour words an A1 learner needs, grouped so related shades stay together, each with a plain meaning and a short example you can copy.
By the end of this page you can…
…name the main colours, describe an object with a colour, and make a shade lighter or darker with words like light, dark and bright.
How this list was chosen
Every word here comes from the English frequency list (hermitdave/FrequencyWords), which ranks words by how often they appear in a large collection of everyday subtitles. From that list we kept the colour words a beginner needs and grouped them by shade rather than by rank. The Rank column is the word’s real position in the list — a lower number means the word is more common.

Using a colour in a sentence
A colour word is an adjective — a word that describes a noun. In English the adjective goes before the noun: a red car, a blue door, green apples. You can also put the colour after the verb to be: the car is red, the apples are green.
Colours do not change for a plural. You say two red cars, never two reds cars. To describe a shade, put light, dark or bright in front of the colour: light blue, dark green, bright yellow.
