The exam at a glance
B2 First is one rung on the Cambridge English ladder, where each qualification targets a single CEFR level. It is made up of four papers and takes about three and a half hours in total.
| Key fact | B2 First (FCE) |
|---|---|
| CEFR level | B2 (upper-intermediate) |
| Cambridge English Scale band | 160–179 |
| Number of papers | 4 |
| Total time | about 3.5 hours |
| Format | digital or paper-based |
The four papers
The four papers test reading and use of English, writing, listening and speaking. Cambridge states the format is the same for the digital and the paper-based exam, so you prepare the same way for either.
| Paper | Time | Parts |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and Use of English | 1 hour 15 minutes | 7 parts, 52 questions |
| Writing | 1 hour 20 minutes | 2 parts |
| Listening | about 40 minutes | 4 parts, 30 questions |
| Speaking | about 14 minutes per pair | 4 parts |
Reading and Use of English
This paper is worth 40% of the total mark and gives you 2,200–2,500 words to read across its seven parts. The first four parts are the Use of English half — they test grammar and vocabulary rather than reading speed.
| Part | Task | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Multiple-choice cloze (vocabulary) | 8 |
| 2 | Open cloze (grammar and vocabulary) | 8 |
| 3 | Word formation | 8 |
| 4 | Key word transformations | 6 |
| 5 | Multiple choice (reading) | 6 |
| 6 | Gapped text | 6 |
| 7 | Multiple matching | 10 |
Writing
You have 1 hour 20 minutes for two pieces of writing. Part 1 is a compulsory essay; in Part 2 you choose one task from a short menu, which can include a letter or email, a report, a review or an article. You are marked on content, organisation, vocabulary and grammar.
Listening
The Listening paper lasts about 40 minutes with four parts and 30 questions, and the recordings are played twice. Part 1 is a set of eight short, unrelated extracts, each with a three-option multiple-choice question testing feeling, attitude, gist and detail.
Speaking
Speaking takes about 14 minutes and is normally done face to face with a partner and two examiners — one asks the questions, the other listens. It has four parts: an interview about yourself, an individual long turn, a collaborative task where you and your partner discuss prompts for two minutes and then reach a decision, and a follow-up discussion.
How it is scored
Results are reported on the Cambridge English Scale. You get a separate score for Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Use of English, and these combine into one overall score. A B2 result sits in the 160–179 band of the scale; the scale is designed to line up with the CEFR and with IELTS so progress between levels is easy to compare.
Digital or paper?
Cambridge offers B2 First as a digital (on-screen) exam or on paper. It is the same qualification with the same format, parts and timings; the digital version just gives an on-screen experience and faster results. Choose whichever you are more comfortable with — your study plan is identical.

How to prepare with this course
B2 First rewards accuracy and range across all four skills. Work through these pages at and just above B2:
- Grammar: tighten the structures examiners look for with the grammar lessons — the passive in all forms, relative and reduced clauses and linking cause and contrast all turn up in Use of English and Writing.
- Vocabulary: the vocabulary sets build the collocations and word families that Parts 1 and 3 test.
- Reading and writing under time: rehearse with the B2 reading practice and the writing practice guide.
- Listening and speaking: the listening practice guide trains the twice-heard recordings; record yourself to prepare for the paired Speaking test.
