Vocabulary quiz generator
What does this mean?
Based on FrequencyWords (CC BY-SA 4.0). Word selection from FrequencyWords (CC BY-SA 4.0); meanings checked against each language's reference dictionary. Audio is generated in your browser.
How the quiz is built
For each question the tool shows one word and four English meanings. One is correct; the other three are real meanings of other words from the same deck, so the wrong answers are plausible rather than silly. The questions and the order of the options are reshuffled on every run, so retaking the quiz is never the same test twice. Your score updates as you go and is shown at the end — nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.
Where the words come from
The decks are the same beginner word sets used across our tools. The choice of “common” words follows the open FrequencyWords project (CC BY-SA 4.0), and the English meanings are standard dictionary facts checked against each language’s reference (for example the Cambridge Dictionary or the Real Academia Española). Audio for each prompt is spoken by your browser’s built-in voices.
Limits of this tool
- It tests recognition (word → meaning), which is easier than recall; use the flashcards and worksheets to practise producing the word yourself.
- Decks are beginner starter sets, so a short quiz may reuse the same words.
- It is a self-check, not a graded exam, and it maps loosely to CEFR A1 rather than to any official test.
