How to Use Flashcards for Japanese

Cover: how to use flashcards for Japanese, a tidy study desk with small cards and kana
Short answer

Make small Japanese flashcards that force active recall: learn the kana first, then high-frequency words with their reading and meaning, and review on a spaced schedule. Keep one idea per card and test both directions.

Level: N5 (beginner). Flashcards are the fastest way to turn Japanese kana, kanji and words into things you can actually recall. The trick is how you use them, not how many you make.

By the end of this page you can…

…build a small Japanese deck in the right order, review it effectively, and fix cards that are not sticking.

Start with the kana

Before vocabulary, learn to read the two Japanese syllabaries, ひらがな (hiragana) and カタカナ (katakana). Make one card per character — front あ (a), back the sound “a” — and drill them until they are automatic. Once you can read kana, every later card can show the word in its real script with the romaji underneath, instead of romaji alone.

Active recall: the whole point

A flashcard works because it makes you retrieve the answer before you check it. That effort — even a wrong guess you then correct — is what builds the memory. Rereading a card you have just seen feels productive but teaches you little.

So: look at one side, say the answer out loud, then flip. Front 水 (mizu)? Say “water, mizu” before you turn it over.

Build word cards the right way

Learn the words you will meet most. Public word-frequency lists (such as the FrequencyWords project, built from film and TV subtitles) rank words by how often they appear, so the first few hundred give the best return. Add the words from the lessons you are studying.

Keep each word card small and complete:

Front Reading Back
水 mizu water
食べる taberu to eat
今日 kyō today (this day)
学生 gakusei student

Every word card carries three things: the Japanese, its reading in kana or romaji, and the English. A kanji without its reading is only half-learned — you could recognise it but not say it.

Space your reviews

New cards must come back before you forget them, then at growing gaps: later the same day, the next day, a few days, then about a week, then longer. Each successful recall earns a longer wait. This spacing moves a word into long-term memory; cramming the whole deck once does not.

A few minutes most days beats one long weekly session. For the tools that fit that habit, compare the best apps to learn Japanese. Twenty well-made cards reviewed daily beat two hundred you never return to.

A starter handful

These high-frequency Japanese words make a fine first deck once you know the kana. Listen, cover the English, and recall both the reading and the meaning:

  1. 水
    mizu
    water
  2. 家
    ie
    house, home
  3. 食べる
    taberu
    to eat
  4. 飲む
    nomu
    to drink
  5. いい
    ii
    good
  6. 今日
    kyō
    today
  7. ありがとう
    arigatō
    thank you
  8. お願いします
    onegai shimasu
    please / I ask you

1 What should you learn as flashcards first?
Show answer

The kana — ひらがな (hiragana) and カタカナ (katakana) — Reading kana first lets every later card show real script with romaji.

Hint: the romaji for 水 (mizu)

Show answer

mizu — 水 (mizu) — a kanji without its reading is only half-learned.

3 Match the principle to what it means.

  • Active recall
  • Spacing
  • Three-part card
  • Both directions
Show answer
  • Active recall → answer before you flip
  • Spacing → review at growing gaps
  • Three-part card → script, reading, meaning
  • Both directions → JA → EN and EN → JA

These habits make a Japanese deck effective.

4 You keep failing 食べる (taberu). Best move?
Show answer

Shrink it or add an example sentence — A leech is usually too big or vague — rewrite it smaller.
