は (wa): The Topic Particle
は (wa) is the Japanese topic particle: it marks what a sentence is about. 私は学生です (Watashi wa gakusei desu) means 'As for me, I am a student.' It is written with the ha-kana but always read wa.
Level: N5. (Note: the JLPT publishes no official grammar list; the level shown is the common textbook convention.)
A particle is a short word that comes after a noun to show its job in the sentence. は (wa) is the topic particle: it lifts a noun up and says “this is what I’m talking about”. 私は学生です (Watashi wa gakusei desu) means “As for me, I am a student.”
The rule
は (wa) marks the topic — the thing the rest of the sentence comments on. A loose English translation is “as for…”. The pattern is [topic] は (wa) [comment]: 私は学生です (Watashi wa gakusei desu) = “As for me — a student.”
One spelling quirk to fix in your mind early: the character is the ha-kana, but in this topic-marking role it is always read wa (never ha).
は (wa) does two big jobs:
- Sets the topic / known information. It introduces what you are already both aware of, then adds a comment: 今日は暑いです (Kyō wa atsui desu) = “As for today, it’s hot.”
- Shows contrast. Marking two things with は (wa) sets them against each other: 猫は好きですが、犬は好きじゃありません (Neko wa suki desu ga, inu wa suki ja arimasen) = “I like cats, but I don’t like dogs.”
Topic vs subject at a glance

|---|---|---|
| 私は学生です。 | Watashi wa gakusei desu. | I am a student. (neutral topic) |
| 私が学生です。 | Watashi ga gakusei desu. | I am the student. (identifies who) |
| コーヒーは飲みます。 | Kōhī wa nomimasu. | Coffee, I do drink. (contrast) |
| 時間はありません。 | Jikan wa arimasen. | I have no time. (emphasis on the negative) |

Common mistakes
- ❌ 私が田中です (Watashi ga Tanaka desu) for a plain self-introduction → ✅ 私は田中です (Watashi wa Tanaka desu). が (ga) stresses “I, and no one else”; a neutral introduction uses は (wa).
- ❌ reading the ha-kana は (wa) as “ha” in 私は (watashi wa) → ✅ read it wa. As the topic marker the ha-kana is pronounced wa.
- ❌ 私はが学生です (watashi wa ga gakusei desu) → ✅ 私は学生です (Watashi wa gakusei desu). Use only one particle after the noun, not は (wa) and が (ga) together.
- ❌ 私を学生です (watashi o gakusei desu) → ✅ 私は学生です (Watashi wa gakusei desu). を (o) marks a direct object, not a topic.
- ❌ 猫が好きですが、犬が… (neko ga suki desu ga, inu ga…) for an explicit contrast → ✅ 猫は…、犬は… (neko wa…, inu wa…). Contrast between two items is marked with は (wa).
A short conversation
— お名前は何ですか。 (O-namae wa nan desu ka.) — “What is your name?” — 私はリンです。 (Watashi wa Rin desu.) — “I’m Rin.” — お仕事は? (O-shigoto wa?) — “And your job?” — 私は学生です。 (Watashi wa gakusei desu.) — “I’m a student.”
Usage notes
- は (wa) can sit after other particles. It attaches to combinations for topic or contrast: には (ni wa), では (de wa), とは (to wa). Example: 東京には行きます (Tōkyō ni wa ikimasu) = “To Tokyo, I will go.”
- The topic is often dropped. Once it is clear, Japanese leaves it out: in the dialogue above, お仕事は? (O-shigoto wa?) trails off because the comment is understood.
- One topic per sentence, usually. A second は (wa) normally signals contrast rather than a second topic.
Compared with other particles
- が (ga) marks the grammatical subject and new information, where は (wa) marks the known topic. See the ga particle lesson.
- も (mo) means “also / too” and replaces は (wa): 私も学生です (Watashi mo gakusei desu) = “I too am a student.” See the mo particle lesson.
- For a full side-by-side, read は (wa) versus が (ga).
