How to Use Flashcards for German

Cover: How to use flashcards for German, with examples: Wasser, Haus, Arbeit, essen, gut
Short answer

Make flashcards that force recall, not recognition: a prompt on one side, the answer on the other. Build decks from the most common words first, learn every German noun with its article and plural, and review on a spacing schedule.

Level: A1. Flashcards are the fastest way to turn German words you have met into words you can actually use — if you make them test recall, not just recognition. For German the golden rule is to learn every noun with its article and plural, because der/die/das drives the whole sentence.

By the end of this page you can…

…build a German flashcard deck from common words, store each noun with its gender and plural, and review it with active recall and spacing.

Build your deck from vocabulary sets

Make cards from frequency-ranked lists — the most common words first — rather than random vocabulary. Filter out names and noise, and add a few new cards at a time. The commonest couple of thousand words cover most everyday German, so they repay study first.

A simple starting set of very common words — note the article on each noun:

  1. das Wasser
water — ein Glas Wasser (a glass of water).
  2. das Haus
house — ich gehe nach Hause (I'm going home).
  3. die Arbeit
work — ich gehe zur Arbeit (I go to work).
  4. essen
to eat — wir essen um sieben (we eat at seven).
  5. gut
good — ein gutes Buch (a good book).
  6. jeden Tag
every day — ich lese jeden Tag (I read every day).

Store article and plural, not just the word

German nouns have one of three genders — der, die, das — and an unpredictable plural. Put both on the card so you learn the whole word:

  • Front: table. Back: der Tisch, die Tische.
  • Colour-code the three genders (a common trick: blue der, red die, green das) so the gender rides along with the word.
  • Capitalise every noun — German always does, in the middle of a sentence too.

Use active recall, not re-reading

The learning happens in the moment you try to remember before flipping the card. Read the prompt, say the answer out loud, then check. Re-reading both sides feels productive but teaches little; the effort of recall is what makes a word stick.

Space your reviews

Review a card just before you would forget it. Each correct recall earns a longer wait; each miss brings the card back soon. Spaced-repetition (SRS) apps schedule this automatically — you simply answer honestly whether you remembered.

Make good cards

  • One idea per card. A single word or phrase, not a list.
  • Learn chunks, not just words. German relies on set phrases and separable verbs: es gibt (there is), zu Hause (at home), Spaß haben (to have fun). Put the chunk on the card.
  • Both directions. Make a German to meaning card and a meaning to German card, so you can both understand and produce the word.
  • Add context. One short example sentence beats a bare definition. Pull natural sentences from a public corpus such as Tatoeba.

How to say it

German spelling is regular, but a few sounds need a note on the card:

  • ü and ö. Say “ee” with rounded lips for ü (über, für); say “ay” with rounded lips for ö (schön, hören).
  • ch. Soft after e/i (“ich” ≈ “ikh”); harsh after a/o/u (“Buch”, “ach”). Not an English “ch”.
  • w and v. w sounds like English “v” (Wasser = “VASS-er”); v usually sounds like “f” (Vater = “FAH-ter”).
  • ß and long vowels. ß is a sharp “ss” (Straße = “SHTRAH-se”); a doubled vowel or vowel+h is long (Haar, Jahr).

1 What should a German noun card always show?
Show answer

the article and the plural — Store article + word + plural: der Tisch, die Tische.

2 What makes a flashcard review actually work?
Show answer

trying to recall before you flip — Active recall — producing the answer before checking — builds memory.

Hint: it widens the gap as you succeed

Show answer

spaced — Spaced repetition increases the interval each time you recall a card correctly.

4 Match each German noun to its article.

  • Wasser
  • Arbeit
  • Haus
  • Tisch
Show answer
  • Wasser → das
  • Arbeit → die
  • Haus → das
  • Tisch → der

Genders are not guessable, so learn each noun with der, die or das.
