How to Use Flashcards for Chinese
Make flashcards that force recall, not recognition: a prompt on one side, the answer on the other. Build decks from the most common words first, drill character, pinyin and tone together, and review on a spacing schedule so hard cards come back sooner.
Level: beginner (HSK 1). Flashcards are the fastest way to turn Chinese words you have met into words you truly know — as long as you use them to recall, not just to re-read. Because every word is a character plus a tone, good cards drill all of it together.
By the end of this page you can…
…build a Chinese flashcard deck from common words and review it with active recall and spacing.
Build your deck from vocabulary sets
Make cards from frequency-ranked lists — the most common words first — rather than random vocabulary. Filter out names and noise, and add a few new cards at a time. The commonest few hundred words cover a large share of everyday speech, so they repay study first.
A simple starting set of high-frequency words:
- 我wǒI / me
- 你nǐyou
- 好hǎogood
- 谢谢xièxiethank you
- 水shuǐwater
- 吃chīeat
- 大dàbig
- 人rénperson
Use active recall, not re-reading
The learning happens in the moment you try to remember before flipping the card. See the character, say the pinyin and tone out loud, picture the meaning, then check. Reading both sides without trying feels productive but teaches little; the effort of recall is what makes a word stick.
Space your reviews
Review a card just before you would forget it. Each correct recall earns a longer wait before the next review; each miss brings the card back soon. Spaced-repetition (SRS) apps schedule this automatically — you simply answer honestly whether you remembered.
Make good cards
- One idea per card. A single word, not a list.
- Character, pinyin and tone together. Write 买 (mǎi) with the tone mark; the tone is part of the word.
- Both directions. Make a character to meaning card and a meaning to character card, so you can read and also produce the word.
- Add context. One short example sentence beats a bare word. Pull natural sentences from a public corpus such as Tatoeba.
- Group by radical or theme. Cards for related characters (family, food, numbers) reinforce each other.
Chinese-specific tip
Drill tones explicitly. Make a few cards that contrast near-identical syllables, such as 买 (mǎi, buy) versus 卖 (mài, sell), or 问 (wèn, ask) versus 吻 (wěn, kiss). For handwriting, add a card that shows the character’s stroke order. Test recognition (character to meaning) and production (meaning to character and tone) as separate cards.

spaced — Spaced repetition increases the interval each time you recall a card correctly.
4 Match each pair to what it contrasts.
- 买 (mǎi) / 卖 (mài)
- 我 (wǒ) / 你 (nǐ)
- 吃 (chī) / 喝 (hē)
- 好 (hǎo) / 大 (dà)
Show answer
- 买 (mǎi) / 卖 (mài) → tone: buy vs sell
- 我 (wǒ) / 你 (nǐ) → meaning: I vs you
- 吃 (chī) / 喝 (hē) → meaning: eat vs drink
- 好 (hǎo) / 大 (dà) → meaning: good vs big
买 (mǎi) / 卖 (mài) differ only by tone; the others differ by meaning — a reminder to drill tones, not just characters.
