Chinese Reading Practice: Beginner
This beginner Chinese reading gives a short text in simple characters with pinyin about a student's day. Read it once for the gist, again to guess new words, use the glossed word list if stuck, then answer the comprehension questions.
Level: beginner (HSK 1). Reading is where the characters you have learned start carrying meaning. This page gives one short text with pinyin and a simple method to work through it — a few focused minutes that build real reading confidence.

How to read a beginner Chinese text
Do not translate character by character. Work in passes, each with its own goal:
- First read — the gist. Read the whole text once without stopping. What is it about? Who is speaking?
- Second read — guess. Read again and try to work out new characters from the words around them before you check anything.
- Word list. Only now look at the glossed words below for anything still unclear.
- Answer, then check back. Do the comprehension questions, returning to the text to confirm each answer.
The text: A student’s day
你好！ (Nǐ hǎo!) — Hello! 我叫小明。 (Wǒ jiào Xiǎomíng.) — My name is Xiaoming. 我是学生。 (Wǒ shì xuéshēng.) — I am a student. 我住在北京。 (Wǒ zhù zài Běijīng.) — I live in Beijing. 早上我喝茶。 (Zǎoshang wǒ hē chá.) — In the morning I drink tea. 然后我去学校。 (Ránhòu wǒ qù xuéxiào.) — Then I go to school. 学校很大。 (Xuéxiào hěn dà.) — The school is big. 我学习中文。 (Wǒ xuéxí Zhōngwén.) — I study Chinese. 中文很有意思。 (Zhōngwén hěn yǒuyìsi.) — Chinese is very interesting. 晚上我回家。 (Wǎnshang wǒ huí jiā.) — In the evening I go home.
