The Verb 在 (zài): Saying Where Things Are

Cover: the Chinese verb zai for location, with examples wo zai jia, shu zai zhuozi shang, ta zai xuexiao
Short answer

To say where someone or something is in Chinese, use 在 (zài): subject + 在 + place. 我在家 (wǒ zài jiā) means 'I am at home', and 书在桌子上 (shū zài zhuōzi shang) means 'the book is on the table'. Never use 是 (shì) for a location.

Level: HSK 1. One of the first verbs you need in Chinese is 在 (zài) — the word for being at a place. It answers the question “where?” and it follows one clean pattern. The trap for English speakers is reaching for 是 (shì, “to be”) instead; in Chinese, location has its own verb.

The rule

A verb is a word for an action or a state. 在 (zài) is the verb that states where something is located. Use it in one fixed order:

subject + 在 (zài) + place

So 我在家 (wǒ zài jiā) is “I am at home” — literally “I at home”. There is no separate word for “am”; 在 (zài) already carries the meaning “to be located at”. The same frame works for things: 书在桌子上 (shū zài zhuōzi shang) = “the book is on the table”.

A place word can be a noun that is already a location (家 (jiā) “home”, 学校 (xuéxiào) “school”, 中国 (Zhōngguó) “China”) or an object plus a position word that turns it into a place. The common position words go after the noun: 上 (shàng, “on/above”), 里 (lǐ, “in/inside”), 下 (xià, “under”), 旁边 (pángbiān, “beside”). So 桌子 (zhuōzi, “table”) becomes the place 桌子上 (zhuōzi shang, “on the table”).

To negate, put 不 (bù) before 在 (zài): 我不在家 (wǒ bú zài jiā, “I am not at home”). Note the tone change — 不 (bù) is said bú before the fourth-tone 在 (zài). To ask “where”, use the question word 哪儿 (nǎr) or 哪里 (nǎlǐ): 你在哪儿? (nǐ zài nǎr?, “where are you?”).

Common mistakes

  • ❌ 我是家 (wǒ shì jiā) → ✅ 我在家 (wǒ zài jiā). Location uses 在 (zài), not 是 (shì); 是 (shì) means “to be” in the sense of identity: 我是学生 (wǒ shì xuésheng) = “I am a student”.
  • ❌ 书在上桌子 (shū zài shàng zhuōzi) → ✅ 书在桌子上 (shū zài zhuōzi shang). The position word 上 (shàng) comes after the noun, not before.
  • ❌ 我不是在家 (wǒ bú shì zài jiā) → ✅ 我不在家 (wǒ bú zài jiā). Negate 在 (zài) directly with 不 (bù); do not add 是 (shì).
  • ❌ 我在家是 (wǒ zài jiā shì) → ✅ 我在家 (wǒ zài jiā). Do not tack 是 (shì) onto the end; 在 (zài) already means “to be located”.
  • ❌ 你在哪儿吗? (nǐ zài nǎr ma?) → ✅ 你在哪儿? (nǐ zài nǎr?). A sentence with a question word like 哪儿 (nǎr) does not also take 吗 (ma).

A short conversation

— 小明 (Xiǎomíng): 你在哪儿? — Nǐ zài nǎr? — Where are you? — 丽丽 (Lìlì): 我在图书馆。 — Wǒ zài túshūguǎn. — I am at the library. — 小明 (Xiǎomíng): 老师在吗? — Lǎoshī zài ma? — Is the teacher there? — 丽丽 (Lìlì): 他不在。他在教室。 — Tā bú zài. Tā zài jiàoshì. — He isn’t; he’s in the classroom.

Said on its own, 在 (zài) can even mean “to be present / here”: 老师在吗? (lǎoshī zài ma?) = “Is the teacher in?”.

Usage notes

  • No “am/is/are” to add. 在 (zài) is the whole verb; 我在家 (wǒ zài jiā) needs nothing more.
  • Position words are toneless and come last. 上 (shàng), 里 (lǐ), 下 (xià) are usually said in a light neutral tone after the noun: 桌子上 (zhuōzi shang), 包里 (bāo lǐ).
  • 在 (zài) + place + verb = where an action happens. 我在家吃饭 (wǒ zài jiā chīfàn) = “I eat at home”. The place phrase sits before the verb, never after it.
  • Standing alone, 在 (zài) means “to be present”. 他在不在? (tā zài bú zài?) = “Is he in or not?”.

Compared with 是 (shì) and 有 (yǒu)

  • 是 (shì) — identity, not place. 是 (shì) links two things that are the same: 这是书 (zhè shì shū, “this is a book”). For where, switch to 在 (zài). See the lesson on 是 (shì).
  • 有 (yǒu) — existence at a place. 有 (yǒu) says something exists somewhere, usually something new or indefinite, with the order place + 有 (yǒu) + thing: 桌子上有书 (zhuōzi shang yǒu shū, “there is a book on the table”). Compare 在 (zài), which starts from a known thing and tells you its location: 书在桌子上 (shū zài zhuōzi shang). Read the lesson on 有 (yǒu).
