How to Use Flashcards for Korean

Cover: How to use flashcards for Korean, with examples 나, 물, 집, 좋다
Short answer

Make flashcards that force recall, not recognition: a prompt on one side, the answer on the other. Build decks from the most common words first, drill the Hangul, its sound and its meaning together, and review on a spacing schedule so hard cards come back sooner.

Level: TOPIK 1. Flashcards are the fastest way to turn Korean words you have met into words you truly know — as long as you use them to recall, not just to re-read. Because every word is written in Hangul, good cards make you decode the script as well as the meaning.

By the end of this page you can…

…build a Korean flashcard deck from common words and review it with active recall and spacing.

Build your deck from vocabulary sets

Make cards from frequency-ranked lists — the most common words first — rather than random vocabulary. Filter out names and noise, and add a few new cards at a time. The commonest couple of thousand words cover most everyday Korean, so they repay study first.

A simple starting set of high-frequency words:

  1. 나
    na
    I / me
  2. 너
    neo
    you
  3. 물
    mul
    water
  4. 집
    jip
    house / home
  5. 사람
    saram
    person
  6. 먹다
    meokda
    to eat
  7. 좋다
    jota
    to be good
  8. 가다
    gada
    to go

Use active recall, not re-reading

The learning happens in the moment you try to remember before flipping the card. See the Hangul, say it out loud, picture the meaning, then check. Reading both sides without trying feels productive but teaches little; the effort of recall is what makes a word stick.

Space your reviews

Review a card just before you would forget it. Each correct recall earns a longer wait before the next review; each miss brings the card back soon. Spaced-repetition (SRS) apps schedule this automatically — you simply answer honestly whether you remembered.

Make good cards

  • One idea per card. A single word, not a list.
  • Hangul on the front. Put the 한글 (Hangeul) as the prompt, with romanization only as a backup, so you practise reading the script.
  • Both directions. Make a Hangul to meaning card and a meaning to Hangul card, so you can read and also produce the word.
  • Add context. One short example sentence beats a bare word. Pull natural sentences from a public corpus such as Tatoeba.
  • Group by theme. Cards for related words — family, food, numbers — reinforce each other.

Korean-specific tip

Drill the script. Early on, make a few cards that contrast look-alike or sound-alike syllables, such as 말 (mal, word/horse) versus 발 (bal, foot), or the vowels 어 (eo) versus 오 (o). Learn each noun together with the particle it often takes, for example 물이 (muri) “water (subject)”, so the grammar comes along for free. Test recognition (Hangul to meaning) and production (meaning to Hangul) as separate cards.

1 What makes a flashcard review actually work?
Show answer

trying to recall the answer before you flip — Active recall — producing the answer before checking — is what builds memory.

2 What should be on the front of a good Korean card?
Show answer

the Hangul, e.g. 물 (mul) — Put the Hangul on the front so you practise reading the script itself.

Hint: it widens the gap as you succeed

Show answer

spaced — Spaced repetition increases the interval each time you recall a card correctly.

4 Match each word with its meaning.

  • 물 (mul)
  • 집 (jip)
  • 사람 (saram)
  • 먹다 (meokda)
Show answer
  • 물 (mul) → water
  • 집 (jip) → house
  • 사람 (saram) → person
  • 먹다 (meokda) → to eat

물 (mul) water, 집 (jip) house, 사람 (saram) person, 먹다 (meokda) to eat — all high-frequency starter words.

reviewing a card just before you would forget it — You widen the gap after each success and shorten it after a miss.

  4. 4Why put the Hangul, e.g. 집 (jip), on the front of the card?
    Show answer

so you practise reading the script, not just the romanization — Reading the Hangul is a core skill, so make the card test it.

  5. 5A good flashcard contains…
    Show answer

one word with its Hangul, romanization and a short example — One idea per card, with the Hangul, its sound and a short example.

  6. 6Why test both Hangul to meaning and meaning to Hangul?
    Show answer

so you can both read and produce the word — Reading a word and producing it are different skills.

  7. 7A sensible daily habit is to…
    Show answer

add a few new cards and review the old ones — A small, steady flow of new cards plus daily review is sustainable.
