ね (ne) and よ (yo): Sentence-Ending Particles

Cover: Japanese sentence-ending particles ne and yo, with example sentences
Short answer

Add ね (ne) to the end of a sentence to seek agreement, like 'right?': いい天気ですね (ii tenki desu ne), 'Nice weather, isn't it?'. Add よ (yo) to tell the listener something new or to insist: 時間ですよ (jikan desu yo), 'It's time, you know.'

Level: N5. (Note: the JLPT publishes no official grammar list; the level shown is the common textbook convention.)

A sentence-ending particle is a short word you tack onto the end of a sentence to colour it — to show how you feel about what you just said or how you want the listener to react. Japanese has several; the two you meet first are ね (ne) and よ (yo). They change the mood of a sentence without changing its meaning.

The rule

ね (ne) is the agreement particle. You add it when you expect the listener to feel the same way — it is close to the English tag “…, right?” or “…, isn’t it?”. When you say いい天気ですね (ii tenki desu ne), “Nice weather, isn’t it?”, you assume the other person agrees. It softens a statement and invites a nod rather than an answer.

よ (yo) is the assertion particle. You add it to tell the listener something they do not yet know, to correct them, or to press a point. 時間ですよ (jikan desu yo), “It’s time, you know,” gives the listener new information. Where ね (ne) reaches for shared ground, よ (yo) pushes your information across to the other side.

Both attach after the final word, including the polite ending です (desu) or ます (masu): 行きます (ikimasu, “I go”) can become 行きますね (ikimasu ne, “I’ll go, OK?”) or 行きますよ (ikimasu yo, “I’m going, you know”). In casual speech they follow the plain form too: 行くよ (iku yo), 行くね (iku ne).

Common mistakes

  • ❌ 時間ですね (jikan desu ne) to someone who is late → ✅ 時間ですよ (jikan desu yo). You are giving new information and pushing them along, so use よ (yo); ね (ne) would wrongly suggest you both already agree it is time.
  • ❌ いい天気ですよ (ii tenki desu yo) to a friend standing in the same sunshine → ✅ いい天気ですね (ii tenki desu ne). The weather is obvious to both of you, so seek agreement with ね (ne); よ (yo) sounds like you are informing them of something they cannot see.
  • ❌ using よ (yo) with every statement to a superior → ✅ drop it or use ね (ne). Overusing よ (yo) can sound pushy or childish; in careful, polite speech it is used sparingly.
  • ❌ 高いですねよ (takai desu ne yo) → ✅ 高いですよね (takai desu yo ne). The order is よ (yo) then ね (ne): first you assert, then you check for agreement.
  • ❌ treating ね (ne) as a real question needing a spoken answer → ✅ a nod or あいづち (aizuchi, a short “うん (un)” / “そうですね (sō desu ne)”) is enough; ね (ne) invites agreement, not information.

A short conversation

— いい天気ですね。 (Ii tenki desu ne.) — “Lovely weather, isn’t it?” — そうですね。でも、午後は雨が降りますよ。 (Sō desu ne. Demo, gogo wa ame ga furimasu yo.) — “It is. But it’s going to rain this afternoon, you know.” — えっ、本当ですか。じゃあ、傘を持っていきますね。 (E’, hontō desu ka. Jā, kasa o motte ikimasu ne.) — “Oh, really? Then I’ll take an umbrella, OK?”

Usage notes

  • ね (ne) can simply build rapport. Even when there is nothing to confirm, a light ね (ne) makes speech friendlier: よろしくお願いしますね (yoroshiku onegai shimasu ne) softens a request.
  • よ (yo) with a falling tone insists; with a rising tone it reassures. 大丈夫ですよ (daijōbu desu yo) with a gentle rise means “it’s fine, don’t worry”.
  • よね (yo ne) is for when you are fairly sure but want a check: 会議は三時でしたよね (kaigi wa san-ji deshita yo ne), “The meeting was at three, wasn’t it?”.
  • Stretching ねー (nē) adds warmth or thought: そうですねー (sō desu nē) is a drawn-out “well, let me see…”.

Compared with か (ka)

  • か (ka) marks a genuine question and asks for information: 学生ですか (gakusei desu ka), “Are you a student?” — the speaker does not know the answer.
  • ね (ne) is not a real question: 学生ですね (gakusei desu ne), “You’re a student, right?”, assumes the answer is yes and only seeks confirmation. If you truly do not know, use か (ka); if you are checking something you already believe, use ね (ne). See the full lesson on the か (ka) question particle.
