の (no): Possession & Noun Linking
の (no) links two nouns in the order AのB, where A describes B. 私の本 (Watashi no hon) means 'my book'. It marks possession (my, your), and also origin, type or material: 日本の車 (Nihon no kuruma), 'a Japanese car'.
Level: N5. (Note: the JLPT publishes no official grammar list; the level shown is the common textbook convention.)
A particle is a short word placed after a noun to show its job. の (no) is the linking particle: it joins two nouns in the shape A の (no) B, where A describes B. 私の本 (Watashi no hon) means “my book”.
The rule
の (no) connects two nouns so that the first one (A) modifies the second one (B): A の (no) B = “the B of A”. The second noun is the main thing; the first tells you whose it is or what kind it is. 私の本 (Watashi no hon) = “my book”; 田中さんの車 (Tanaka-san no kuruma) = “Mr Tanaka’s car”.
Its most common job is possession — my, your, the company’s — but it covers much more. It also marks origin, type, material and belonging: 日本の車 (Nihon no kuruma) = “a Japanese car”, 木のテーブル (ki no tēburu) = “a wooden table”, 歴史の本 (rekishi no hon) = “a history book”. In each case A simply narrows down which B you mean.
A useful rule of thumb: whenever two nouns sit next to each other and the first one describes the second, you need の (no) between them. Leaving it out — 日本語先生 (nihongo sensei) — is one of the most common beginner errors.
の (no) can also stand in for the noun it would have modified, the way English “mine” replaces “my book”: 私の (watashi no) = “mine”, それは友達の (sore wa tomodachi no) = “that is my friend’s”.

Common mistakes
- ❌ 日本語先生 (nihongo sensei) → ✅ 日本語の先生 (nihongo no sensei). Two nouns side by side need の (no) between them; don’t drop it.
- ❌ 私本 (watashi hon) → ✅ 私の本 (watashi no hon). “My book” is 私の本 (watashi no hon); a bare 私 (watashi) next to a noun is not enough.
- ❌ 私のの母 (watashi no no haha) → ✅ 私の母 (watashi no haha). Use one の (no) between the two nouns, never two.
- ❌ 誰か傘 (dare ka kasa) for “whose umbrella” → ✅ 誰の傘 (dare no kasa). Possession asks 誰の (dare no), “whose”.
- ❌ 私の友達の母の車の色の話 (watashi no tomodachi no haha no kuruma no iro no hanashi) → ✅ break a long chain into two short sentences; strings of の (no) get hard to read.
A short conversation
— これは誰の鞄ですか。 (Kore wa dare no kaban desu ka.) — “Whose bag is this?” — 私の鞄です。 (Watashi no kaban desu.) — “It’s my bag.” — じゃあ、これは? (Jā, kore wa?) — “Then what about this one?” — それは友達のです。 (Sore wa tomodachi no desu.) — “That one is my friend’s.”
Notice the last line drops the noun: 友達の (tomodachi no) alone means “my friend’s (one)”.
Usage notes
- の (no) can replace the following noun. Once the noun is obvious, Japanese leaves it out: 私の (watashi no) = “mine”, 赤いの (akai no) = “the red one”. This “stand-in の (no)” is extremely common in shops and comparisons.
- Chaining is fine in small doses. 私の母の車 (watashi no haha no kuruma), “my mother’s car”, reads naturally; three or more の (no) in a row usually means you should split the idea into two sentences.
- Linking is about more than ownership. の (no) also joins origin (日本の (Nihon no)), type (歴史の (rekishi no)), material (木の (ki no)) and apposition (学生の鈴木さん (gakusei no Suzuki-san), “Suzuki, the student”).
- Word order is fixed. The describing noun always comes first: 日本語の先生 (nihongo no sensei) is “a teacher of Japanese”; 先生の日本語 (sensei no nihongo) would mean “the teacher’s Japanese”.
Compared with the nominalising の (no)
- The same の (no) has a second, N4 job: it turns a verb or a whole clause into a noun. 食べるのが好きです (Taberu no ga suki desu) = “I like eating” — here の (no) nominalises the verb 食べる (taberu), rather than linking two nouns. It also builds the explanatory のです / んです (no desu / n desu) ending. That nominalising の (no) is a separate N4 topic; this page is only about linking two nouns.
