で (de): Place of Action & Means Particle

Cover: the Japanese particle de with example forms uchi de, densha de and zenbu de
Short answer

で (de) marks the setting or means of an action. It shows where an action happens (家で, uchi de, at home), the means or tool used (電車で, densha de, by train), a cause (風邪で, kaze de, because of a cold) and a total or scope (全部で, zenbu de, in total).

Level: N5. (Note: the JLPT publishes no official grammar list; the level shown is the common textbook convention.)

A particle is a short word placed after a noun to show its job in the sentence. で (de) is the particle that frames how or where an action happens: the place you do something, the tool or transport you use, the cause behind an event, or a total you add up to.

The rule

で (de) attaches to a noun and tells you the setting or the means of the action. The noun before it and the verb at the end together show which job is meant.

  • Place of an action. With a verb you do — eat, study, buy, meet, play — で (de) marks where it happens: 家で食べます (Uchi de tabemasu) = “I eat at home.”
  • Means, tool or material. で (de) marks what you use to do something: 電車で行きます (Densha de ikimasu) = “I go by train”; 箸で食べます (Hashi de tabemasu) = “I eat with chopsticks.”
  • Cause. With a noun outside your control, で (de) means “because of”: 風邪で休みました (Kaze de yasumimashita) = “I was absent because of a cold.”
  • Total, scope and limit. で (de) marks a total or the group a statement holds within: 全部で千円です (Zenbu de sen-en desu) = “It’s 1,000 yen in total”; クラスで一番です (Kurasu de ichiban desu) = “I’m the best in the class.”

Common mistakes

  • ❌ 家にご飯を食べます (uchi ni gohan o tabemasu) → ✅ 家でご飯を食べます (Uchi de gohan o tabemasu). Eating is an action, so the place takes で (de); に (ni) is only for where something exists.
  • ❌ 友達で行きます (tomodachi de ikimasu) → ✅ 友達と行きます (Tomodachi to ikimasu). The person you do something with takes と (to); 友達で (tomodachi de) would sound as if your friend were a vehicle.
  • ❌ 歩いてで行きます (aruite de ikimasu) → ✅ 歩いて行きます (Aruite ikimasu). “On foot” uses the て-form 歩いて (aruite) with no で (de); only vehicles like 電車で (densha de) take で (de).
  • ❌ 疲れたで休みました (tsukareta de yasumimashita) → ✅ 疲れたので休みました (Tsukareta node yasumimashita). で (de) marks a noun cause; a clause cause needs ので (node) or から (kara).
  • ❌ 米で酒を作ります (kome de sake o tsukurimasu) → ✅ 米から酒を作ります (Kome kara sake o tsukurimasu). When the material is transformed beyond recognition, use から (kara); で (de) is for a material you can still see.

A short conversation

— 週末は何をしますか。 (Shūmatsu wa nani o shimasu ka.) — “What do you do on the weekend?” — 家で映画を見ます。 (Uchi de eiga o mimasu.) — “I watch films at home.” — どうやって来ましたか。 (Dō yatte kimashita ka.) — “How did you come here?” — 電車で来ました。全部で三十分でした。 (Densha de kimashita. Zenbu de sanjuppun deshita.) — “I came by train. Thirty minutes in total.”

Usage notes

  • The verb decides between で (de) and に (ni). Action verbs (食べる (taberu), 読む (yomu), 遊ぶ (asobu)) mark the place with で (de); existence and destination verbs (いる (iru), ある (aru), 住む (sumu), 行く (iku)) use に (ni).
  • で (de) of cause is for things outside your control. Weather, illness and accidents — 雨で (ame de, because of rain), 病気で (byōki de, because of illness). A reason you chose takes から (kara) or ので (node) after a whole clause.
  • “With a person” is と (to), not で (de). 友達と (tomodachi to) = “with a friend.” で (de) after 一人 (hitori) or 二人 (futari) means “by oneself / the two of us,” a different idea.
  • で (de) gives totals and limits. 全部で (zenbu de, in total), 三つで (mittsu de, for three), 一時間で (ichi-jikan de, within an hour). This is the “set a limit” feel behind the particle’s many jobs.

Compared with…

  • に (ni) marks a point in time, where something exists, a destination and the receiver of an action — never where an action happens. 公園に木があります (Kōen ni ki ga arimasu) = “There are trees in the park” (existence), while 公園で遊びます (Kōen de asobimasu) = “I play in the park” (action). See the に (ni) particle lesson.
  • を (o) marks the direct object — the thing the action is done to — not the place or means. パンを食べます (Pan o tabemasu) = “I eat bread” (を (o) marks the bread), while レストランで食べます (Resutoran de tabemasu) = “I eat at a restaurant” (で (de) marks the place). With a motion verb, を (o) can also mark the route passed through: 公園を散歩します (Kōen o sanpo shimasu). See the を (o) particle lesson.
