へ (e): The Japanese Direction Particle

Cover: the Japanese particle he read e, with example forms Tōkyō e, gakkō e and ie e
Short answer

へ (e) is the direction particle. Written with the character へ but read e, it attaches to a place and marks the direction you move toward: 東京へ行きます (Tōkyō e ikimasu), I go to Tokyo. For a destination it overlaps with に (ni).

Level: N5. (Note: the JLPT publishes no official grammar list; the level shown is the common textbook convention.)

A particle is a short word placed after a noun to show its job in the sentence. へ (e) is the direction particle: it attaches to a place and points at the direction you move toward. Its one trap is the reading — the character へ (he) is normally the syllable he, but as a particle it is read e.

The rule

へ (e) attaches to a place noun and marks the direction of movement. It is used with motion verbs such as 行く (iku, go), 来る (kuru, come), 帰る (kaeru, return) and 出かける (dekakeru, go out).

  • Direction toward a place. 学校へ行きます (Gakkō e ikimasu) = “I go to school.” The place before へ (e) is where the movement is headed.
  • Read it as e, not he. The particle へ (e) is pronounced e. The same character is read he in ordinary words such as へや (heya), room.
  • Needs a motion verb. へ (e) only works when something moves. With a verb of existence like ある (aru) or いる (iru), you cannot use へ (e); that job belongs to に (ni).
  • Often interchangeable with に (ni) for a destination. 東京へ行く (Tōkyō e iku) and 東京に行く (Tōkyō ni iku) are both natural. へ (e) highlights the direction travelled; に (ni) highlights arriving at the point.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ 部屋へあります (heya e arimasu) → ✅ 部屋にあります (Heya ni arimasu). ある (aru) is existence, not movement, so the place takes に (ni), never へ (e).
  • ❌ 友達へ電話します (tomodachi e denwa shimasu) → ✅ 友達に電話します (Tomodachi ni denwa shimasu). A receiver of an action takes に (ni); へ (e) is only for direction toward a place.
  • ❌ 七時へ起きます (shichi-ji e okimasu) → ✅ 七時に起きます (Shichi-ji ni okimasu). A clock time takes に (ni); へ (e) never marks time.
  • ❌ writing the particle and saying “he” → ✅ say e. 東京へ (Tōkyō e) is read “Tōkyō e”, even though the character is he elsewhere.
  • ❌ 母の手紙 (haha no tegami) for “a letter to my mother” → ✅ 母への手紙 (Haha e no tegami). Keep へ (e) before の (no) to show the letter’s direction; 母の手紙 (haha no tegami) means “my mother’s letter”.

A short conversation

— 今日はどこへ行きますか。 (Kyō wa doko e ikimasu ka.) — “Where are you going today?” — 駅へ行って、電車で大阪へ行きます。 (Eki e itte, densha de Ōsaka e ikimasu.) — “I’ll go to the station and then to Osaka by train.” — 何時に家へ帰りますか。 (Nan-ji ni ie e kaerimasu ka.) — “What time will you come home?” — 八時ごろ帰ります。 (Hachi-ji goro kaerimasu.) — “Around eight.”

Notice the time 何時に (nan-ji ni) still takes に (ni), while every place of movement takes へ (e).

Usage notes

  • The “e” reading is fixed. As a particle, へ (e) is always read e. This is one of three kana that change sound as particles: は (wa), へ (e) and を (o).
  • へ (e) often sounds a little more formal or written. On signs, letters and announcements — ようこそ日本へ (Yōkoso Nihon e, “Welcome to Japan”) — へ (e) is very common; in casual speech に (ni) is at least as frequent.
  • へ (e) can modify a noun with の (no). Add の (no) to turn a direction phrase into a modifier: 東京への道 (Tōkyō e no michi) = “the road to Tokyo”, 母への手紙 (haha e no tegami) = “a letter to my mother”. に (ni) cannot do this directly.
  • It marks a heading, not a precise point. Because へ (e) stresses direction, it works with vague directions too: 右へ (migi e, to the right), 北へ (kita e, to the north), あちらへ (achira e, that way).

Compared with…

  • に (ni) also marks a destination with motion verbs, so 学校に行きます (Gakkō ni ikimasu) and 学校へ行きます (Gakkō e ikimasu) are both correct. The difference is emphasis: に (ni) points at the arrival point, へ (e) at the direction travelled. But に (ni) does many other jobs — time, existence, the receiver of an action — that へ (e) cannot. See the に (ni) particle lesson.
  • で (de) marks the means or the place of an action, not a destination: 電車で行きます (Densha de ikimasu) = “I go by train”. You often see both in one sentence — 電車で東京へ行きます (Densha de Tōkyō e ikimasu). See the で (de) particle lesson.
