에서 (eseo): Place of Action & From

Cover: the Korean particle eseo with example forms jibeseo, hakgyoeseo and hangugeseo
Short answer

에서 (eseo) is the Korean particle for where an action happens and for 'from' a place. It marks the place of an action (집에서 일해요, jibeseo ilhaeyo, I work at home) and a starting point (한국에서 왔어요, hangugeseo wasseoyo, I came from Korea).

Level: TOPIK 1. A particle is a short ending added to a noun to show its job. 에서 (eseo) attaches to a place and marks either where an action happens or the place something comes from. It is the action-partner of the quieter location particle 에 (e).

The rule

에서 (eseo) attaches to a place noun and does one of two jobs. The verb at the end of the sentence tells you which.

  • The place of an action. With a verb you do — 공부하다 (gongbuhada, to study), 일하다 (ilhada, to work), 먹다 (meokda, to eat), 만나다 (mannada, to meet) — 에서 (eseo) marks where it happens: 학교에서 공부해요 (Hakgyoeseo gongbuhaeyo) = “I study at school.”
  • A starting point (“from”). With 오다 (oda, to come) and other movement, 에서 (eseo) marks where something or someone comes from: 한국에서 왔어요 (Hangugeseo wasseoyo) = “I came from Korea.”

The same form 에서 (eseo) is used after a consonant or a vowel — there is no spelling change.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ 집에서 있어요 (jibeseo isseoyo) → ✅ 집에 있어요 (Jibe isseoyo). 있다 (itda) describes being somewhere, not doing something, so it takes 에 (e), never 에서 (eseo).
  • ❌ 학교에 공부해요 (hakgyoe gongbuhaeyo) → ✅ 학교에서 공부해요 (Hakgyoeseo gongbuhaeyo). Studying is an action, so the place takes 에서 (eseo), not 에 (e).
  • ❌ 학교에서 가요 (hakgyoeseo gayo) → ✅ 학교에 가요 (Hakgyoe gayo). 가다 (gada) marks a destination with 에 (e); 학교에서 가요 (hakgyoeseo gayo) would mean “I go from school.”
  • ❌ 한국에 왔어요 (hanguge wasseoyo) → ✅ 한국에서 왔어요 (Hangugeseo wasseoyo). “Came from” marks the origin with 에서 (eseo); 에 (e) would mark a destination.
  • ❌ 방에 음악을 들어요 (bange eumageul deureoyo) → ✅ 방에서 음악을 들어요 (Bangeseo eumageul deureoyo). Listening is an action, so the place takes 에서 (eseo).

A short conversation

— 어디에서 왔어요? (Eodieseo wasseoyo?) — “Where are you from?” — 캐나다에서 왔어요. (Kaenadaeseo wasseoyo.) — “I came from Canada.” — 지금 어디에서 공부해요? (Jigeum eodieseo gongbuhaeyo?) — “Where do you study now?” — 서울에 있는 학교에서 공부해요. (Seoure inneun hakgyoeseo gongbuhaeyo.) — “I study at a school in Seoul.”

Usage notes

  • The verb decides between 에서 (eseo) and 에 (e). An action done at a place takes 에서 (eseo); being there or going there takes 에 (e). 집에서 자요 (Jibeseo jayo, I sleep at home) versus 집에 있어요 (Jibe isseoyo, I am at home).
  • 있다 (itda) and 없다 (eopda) always take 에 (e). They describe existence, so a place with them never takes 에서 (eseo): 화장실이 어디에 있어요? (Hwajangsiri eodie isseoyo?) = “Where is the restroom?”
  • 에서 (eseo) for “from” often pairs with 까지 (kkaji). 에서 (eseo) marks the start and 까지 (kkaji) the end: 집에서 회사까지 (jibeseo hoesakkaji) = “from home to work.”
  • 에서 (eseo) can shorten to 서 (seo) in speech after some place words, but 에서 (eseo) is the full, safe form to write.

Compared with…

  • 에 (e) marks where something is, a destination, and a point in time — never where an action happens. 집에 있어요 (Jibe isseoyo) = “I am at home” (existence), but 집에서 일해요 (Jibeseo ilhaeyo) = “I work at home” (action). See the 에 (e) particle lesson.
  • 부터 / 까지 (buteo / kkaji) mark a range in time or order: 부터 (buteo) is “from” a time and 까지 (kkaji) is “until.” For places, “from” is 에서 (eseo), not 부터 (buteo): 아홉 시부터 (ahop sibuteo, from nine o’clock) but 집에서 (jibeseo, from home). See the 부터 / 까지 (buteo / kkaji) lesson.
