How to Use Flashcards for French

Cover: How to use flashcards for French, with examples: eau, maison, travail, manger, bon
Short answer

Make flashcards that force recall, not recognition: a prompt on one side, the answer on the other. Build decks from the most common words first, always learn a French noun with its article (le or la), and review on a spacing schedule.

Level: A1. Flashcards are the fastest way to turn French words you have met into words you can actually use — if you make them test recall, not just recognition. The one habit that matters most in French is to learn every noun with its gender, because the article changes everything around it.

By the end of this page you can…

…build a French flashcard deck from common words, store each noun with its article, and review it with active recall and spacing.

Build your deck from vocabulary sets

Make cards from frequency-ranked lists — the most common words first — rather than random vocabulary. Filter out names and noise, and add a few new cards at a time. The commonest couple of thousand words cover most everyday French, so they repay study first.

A simple starting set of very common words — note the article on each noun:

  1. l'eau (f)
water — une bouteille d'eau (a bottle of water).
  2. la maison
house — je rentre à la maison (I'm going home).
  3. le travail
work — je vais au travail (I go to work).
  4. manger
to eat — nous mangeons à midi (we eat at noon).
  5. bon / bonne
good — un bon livre (a good book).
  6. tous les jours
every day — je lis tous les jours (I read every day).

Store the gender, not just the word

French nouns are masculine or feminine, and you cannot reliably guess which. Put the article on the card so you learn la table, not bare table:

  • Front: table (the piece of furniture). Back: la table.
  • Colour-code or tag masculine and feminine if your app allows, so the gender sticks with the word.
  • For an irregular adjective, keep both forms: bon / bonne, beau / belle.

Use active recall, not re-reading

The learning happens in the moment you try to remember before flipping the card. Read the prompt, say the answer out loud, then check. Re-reading both sides feels productive but teaches little; the effort of recall is what makes a word stick.

Space your reviews

Review a card just before you would forget it. Each correct recall earns a longer wait; each miss brings the card back soon. Spaced-repetition (SRS) apps schedule this automatically — you simply answer honestly whether you remembered.

Make good cards

  • One idea per card. A single word or phrase, not a list.
  • Learn chunks, not just words. French leans on fixed expressions: avoir faim (to be hungry), faire attention (to pay attention), il y a (there is). Put the chunk on the card.
  • Both directions. Make a French to meaning card and a meaning to French card, so you can both understand and produce the word.
  • Add context. One short example sentence beats a bare definition. Pull natural sentences from a public corpus such as Tatoeba.

How to say it

French spelling and sound diverge, so add a pronunciation hint to any tricky card:

  • Silent final letters. Many endings are not pronounced: petit (“puh-TEE”), beaucoup (“boh-KOO”), les (“lay”). Write the sound on the card.
  • Liaison. A silent final consonant links onto a following vowel: les amis = “lay-za-MEE”, un ami = “uhn-na-MEE”.
  • The French u. Round your lips for “oo”, then say “ee”: that is the vowel in tu, rue, une — different from “ou” (nous = “noo”).
  • Nasal vowels. bon, un, vin end in a vowel sounded through the nose, with the n barely touched.

1 What should always go on a French noun card?
Show answer

its gender (le or la) — French nouns are masculine or feminine, so store the article with the word.

2 What makes a flashcard review actually work?
Show answer

trying to recall before you flip — Active recall — producing the answer before checking — builds memory.

Hint: it widens the gap as you succeed

Show answer

spaced — Spaced repetition increases the interval each time you recall a card correctly.

4 Match each French chunk to its meaning.

  • avoir faim
  • il y a
  • faire attention
  • tous les jours
Show answer
  • avoir faim → to be hungry
  • il y a → there is
  • faire attention → to pay attention
  • tous les jours → every day

French stores meaning in fixed expressions, so learn the chunk.
