French Reading Practice: Elementary

Cover: elementary French reading practice — a short past-tense text about a weekend
Short answer

This elementary (A2) French reading gives a short past-tense text about someone's weekend. Read it once for the gist, again to guess new words, use the glossed word list if you get stuck, then answer the comprehension questions.

Level: A2 (elementary). Once you can read a beginner text, the next step is a slightly longer one that tells a story in the past. This page gives one short A2 text about a weekend and a clear method to work through it — a few focused minutes that push your reading forward.

By the end of this page you can…

…read a short elementary French text in the past tense, follow the order of events through its connectors, and answer questions about what happened.

How to read an elementary French text

Do not translate word by word. Work in passes, each with its own goal:

  1. First read — the gist. Read the whole text once without stopping. What happened, and when?
  2. Second read — the order. Read again and underline the connectors (d’abord, ensuite, puis, enfin, alors); they tell you the sequence.
  3. Word list. Only now look at the glossed words below for anything still unclear.
  4. Answer, then check back. Do the comprehension questions, returning to the text to confirm each answer.

The text: A quiet weekend

Le week-end dernier, je suis allée au marché. — Last weekend, I went to the market. D’abord, j’ai acheté des légumes et du pain. — First, I bought some vegetables and bread. Ensuite, j’ai retrouvé mon amie Claire dans un café. — Then I met my friend Claire in a café. Nous avons parlé pendant une heure. — We talked for an hour. Il faisait beau, alors nous sommes allées au parc. — The weather was nice, so we went to the park. L’après-midi, j’ai lu un livre à la maison. — In the afternoon, I read a book at home. Le soir, j’ai préparé le dîner pour ma famille. — In the evening, I made dinner for my family. C’était un week-end tranquille mais agréable. — It was a quiet but pleasant weekend.

Sound How to say it
-é / -er endings “ay”: acheté = “ash-TAY”, marché = “mar-SHAY”, préparer = “pray-pa-RAY”.
Silent final letters Most final consonants are silent: beaucoup → here beau = “boh”; pain final -n is nasal, not a hard n.
eu rounded “uh”: légumes has the French u; heure = “ur”.
Nasal vowels in / an / on go through the nose: pain = “pa(n)”, pendant = “pah(n)-DAH(n)”.
oi “wa”: au revoir, and here soir = “swar”.
