French Reading Practice: Upper-Intermediate

Cover: Lecture B2 — B2 upper-intermediate reading, with examples: le télétravail, cependant, bien que, un équilibre
Short answer

This upper-intermediate (B2) French reading gives an opinion text about remote work, dense with linking words. Read for the argument, track connectors like cependant and bien que, use the glossary last, then answer the comprehension and discussion questions.

Level: B2 (upper-intermediate). At B2 a text no longer just tells a story — it argues a case. One idea pushes against another, and small linking words carry the whole line of thought. This page gives one short B2 opinion text about remote work and a method to follow its argument, not just its vocabulary.

By the end of this page you can…

…read a short upper-intermediate French opinion text, follow its argument through connectors, tell the writer’s view from the facts they report, and answer comprehension and discussion questions about it.

How to read an upper-intermediate French text

Do not stop at every word. Work in passes, each with its own goal:

  1. First read — the claim. Read once without stopping. What is the writer arguing for or against?
  2. Second read — the connectors. Underline the linking words (cependant, pourtant, bien que, d’ailleurs, c’est pourquoi); they show where the argument turns, concedes or concludes.
  3. Third read — opinion vs fact. Separate what the writer reports (studies, trends) from what they think (selon moi, à mon avis). B2 questions test that difference.
  4. Glossary, then answer. Only now check the glossed words below, then do the questions, returning to the text to confirm each answer.

The text: Le télétravail

Depuis la pandémie, le télétravail s’est imposé dans de nombreuses entreprises. — Since the pandemic, remote work has become the norm in many companies. À première vue, travailler chez soi présente surtout des avantages. — At first sight, working from home mainly offers advantages. On gagne du temps, car on évite les trajets quotidiens. — You save time, because you avoid the daily commute. Cependant, certains salariés se sentent isolés et peinent à séparer vie privée et vie professionnelle. — However, some employees feel isolated and struggle to separate private and professional life. Bien que la technologie soit très utile, elle ne remplace pas vraiment le contact humain. — Although technology is very useful, it does not really replace human contact. D’ailleurs, plusieurs études suggèrent que la créativité souffre lorsque les équipes ne se rencontrent jamais. — Moreover, several studies suggest that creativity suffers when teams never meet. C’est pourquoi de nombreuses entreprises adoptent désormais un modèle hybride. — That is why many companies now adopt a hybrid model. Selon moi, l’avenir du travail ne sera ni entièrement à distance ni entièrement au bureau. — In my view, the future of work will be neither entirely remote nor entirely in the office. Il faudra trouver un équilibre qui convienne à la fois aux salariés et aux employeurs. — We will have to find a balance that suits both employees and employers.
