How to Use Flashcards for Indonesian

Cover: How to use flashcards for Indonesian, with examples: air, rumah, kerja, makan, bagus
Short answer

Make flashcards that force recall, not recognition: a prompt on one side, the answer on the other. Build decks from the most common words first, learn the root word behind each affix, and review on a spacing schedule.

Level: Beginner. Flashcards are the fastest way to turn Indonesian words you have met into words you can actually use — if you make them test recall, not just recognition. Indonesian helps you here: there is no gender and no article to memorise, so you can focus on the word, its meaning, and the root behind its affixes.

By the end of this page you can…

…build an Indonesian flashcard deck from common words, spot the root word inside affixed forms, and review it with active recall and spacing.

Build your deck from vocabulary sets

Make cards from frequency-ranked lists — the most common words first — rather than random vocabulary. Filter out names and noise, and add a few new cards at a time. The commonest couple of thousand words cover most everyday Indonesian, so they repay study first.

A simple starting set of very common words:

  1. air
water — segelas air (a glass of water).
  2. rumah
house — saya pulang ke rumah (I go home).
  3. kerja
work — saya pergi kerja (I go to work).
  4. makan
to eat — kami makan jam tujuh (we eat at seven).
  5. bagus
good — buku yang bagus (a good book).
  6. setiap hari
every day — saya membaca setiap hari (I read every day).

Learn the root, then the affixes

Indonesian builds many words from a root plus prefixes and suffixes. The same root kerja (“work”) gives bekerja (to work), pekerja (worker) and pekerjaan (a job). Learn the root first, then add the affixed forms as separate cards once the root is solid:

  • Front: to work (verb). Back: bekerja (root: kerja).
  • Note the common affixes on the card: me- and ber- make verbs, pe-…-an and -an make nouns.

Use active recall, not re-reading

The learning happens in the moment you try to remember before flipping the card. Read the prompt, say the answer out loud, then check. Re-reading both sides feels productive but teaches little; the effort of recall is what makes a word stick.

Space your reviews

Review a card just before you would forget it. Each correct recall earns a longer wait; each miss brings the card back soon. Spaced-repetition (SRS) apps schedule this automatically — you simply answer honestly whether you remembered.

Make good cards

  • One idea per card. A single word or phrase, not a list.
  • Learn chunks, not just words. Indonesian has many fixed phrases: terima kasih (thank you), selamat pagi (good morning), tidak apa-apa (it’s fine). Put the whole chunk on the card.
  • Both directions. Make an Indonesian to meaning card and a meaning to Indonesian card, so you can both understand and produce the word.
  • Add context. One short example sentence beats a bare definition. Pull natural sentences from a public corpus such as Tatoeba.

How to say it

Indonesian spelling is wonderfully consistent — one letter, one sound — but a few trip up English speakers:

  • c is always “ch”: cuci (“wash”) sounds like “CHOO-chee”, never “koo-see”.
  • ng is one soft sound as in “singer” (uang = money); ny is like the middle of “canyon” (nyala).
  • Vowels are short and pure, never glided: a = “ah”, i = “ee”, u = “oo”, o = “oh”.
  • e has two values: a schwa “uh” (empat = “UHM-pat”) and an open “eh” (enak = “EH-nak”); listen for which.

1 Why learn the root word first in Indonesian?
Show answer

one root gives a whole family of words — From kerja you get bekerja, pekerja and pekerjaan — the root unlocks them all.

2 What makes a flashcard review actually work?
Show answer

trying to recall before you flip — Active recall — producing the answer before checking — builds memory.

Hint: it widens the gap as you succeed

Show answer

spaced — Spaced repetition increases the interval each time you recall a card correctly.

4 Match each affixed word to its root.

  • bekerja
  • pelajaran
  • makanan
  • pekerja
Show answer
  • bekerja → kerja
  • pelajaran → ajar
  • makanan → makan
  • pekerja → kerja

Spotting the root lets you read and build the whole word family.
